Friends of Stewart Park and Wharton Studio Museum opened new accessible winterized bathrooms for Stewart Park. Located in the Wharton Studio building, along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail, the new Wharton bathrooms are the first all-season public bathrooms in Stewart Park and an important addition to a lakefront destination enjoyed year-round by locals and visitors alike. The completed construction of the bathrooms is the exciting first step in developing this historic building into the Wharton Studio Park Center.
While there were previous bathrooms in the Wharton Studio building, they were only open April through October each year, and not during the winter months when the park is increasingly active with visitors walking on the Waterfront Trail, taking in Cayuga Lake, and birdwatching. Accessibility and inclusivity are at the core of all Friends of Stewart Park’s revitalization plans, and the creation of the All-Season Bathrooms will serve everyone who visits the park. From cyclists on the Waterfront Trail, to picnickers and visitors to the future Wharton Studio Park Center, a vibrant cultural and recreational destination developed in partnership with the City of Ithaca.
FSP thanks the project’s team: Todd Zwigard Architects, McPherson Builders, Taitem Engineering, and the City’s staff and Department of Public Works.
