Thanking volunteers and offering new opportunities

November 12, 2020 Thanks!  We see you giving!    All your gifts -- time, talent, financial -- are important contributions to the revitalization of Stewart Park and the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. When you give, you say "this place is important" not just to you, but to everyone in our community. In this issue, we'd like to thank a few of the people who have helped keep these beloved free community resources safe and beautiful for everyone. And you can learn how you can give-- this Saturday and beyond.  REMEMBERING A COLLEAGUE AND FRIEND  Elayne Nicholas  April 6, 1953 - November 6, 2020 Sometimes you meet someone who leaves an indelible mark on your life. This is the case with Elayne Nicholas. A passionate fundraiser and our Stewart Park Playground campaign manager,  but most of all, a dear friend to all of us at FSP, Elayne passed away last Friday. We already miss her laughter,  her political jabs,  and her inimitable personality. Elayne's intelligence and savvy guided our work these past many years and will continue to do so. She loved her family deeply and our hearts go out to them at this terrible loss.  You can read more about Elayne and and her incredible life in her obituary here.   Friends of Stewart Park will be honoring Elayne by naming the new Playground Lending Library and Information Kiosk in her memory. PLAYGROUND POLLENATOR GARDEN CLEANUP AND BULB PLANTING - SATURDAY, 10 AM Join Friends of Stewart Park this Saturday, November 14 from 10:00 am-Noon for a volunteer workday in the park! We'll focus on two tasks.  First we will plant spring-flowering bulbs provided by City Forester Jeanne Grace in the pollinator garden bed near the carousel and do some general playground raking and cleaning up.  For those interested in picking up litter and a fall cleanup throughout the park, we will be working with Zero-Waste Ithaca, a group interested in reducing waste in our daily lives and moving towards the goal of zero waste.  Dress for the weather, bring gloves, rakes and gardening tools, and of course, wear and mask -- COVID-19 protocols will be strictly followed. Meet at the Information Kiosk by the new Playground to sign in and get your assignment!  VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT We see you giving to our community! Your support of Stewart Park and the Cayuga Waterfront Trail through gifts, time and talent keep these free community resources safe and beautiful! Thanks to our volunteers highlighted here and all the others in our community caring for our waterfront.  Richie Holtz Richie Holtz and his wife Carol love to walk and bike the Waterfront Trail. Richie noticed that the beautifully smelling rugosa rose bushes near The Haunt had become overrun with vines and thistles and took on the cleanup task! He worked eight days to make "Rugosa Row" look as good as it smells. Richie says he's happy to adopt this area, but welcomes company! If you'd like to help on Rugosa Row next summer, contact FSP! Savannah Loiacono Savannah signed on to clean up the park with her friends. Helping is even more fun when you have someone to get muddy along with you. Savannah's school requires students do community service work, and all the giggling made 2 hours of work fly by. If you know a student who needs to fulfill community service hours, let them know about Saturday's workday! Carol Mallison Carol Mallison has been involved with the Cayuga Waterfront Trail planning process since 2001!!  Knowing that trail maintenance is very important, Carol proposed that the CWT be divided into sections that could be adopted for ongoing care. You can now be a "Trail Adopter" like Carol, who regularly picks up litter along the east side of the trail, often with her friend Diana Garcia. If you'd like to volunteer on the trail or in the Park, or if you'd like to become a Trail Adopter, message Rick to find out more! GIVING TUESDAY Give your loved ones the gift of a beautiful Stewart Park! When you make a donation on #GivingTuesday, we’ll send a certificate that you can present to someone who will enjoy your gift for years to come. Your donation will go toward park beautification and amenities like flowers, sand toys, pollinator plants or benches.  GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. This year giving to FSP doubles as a gift for your loved one! That's holiday shopping you can feel good about!    WEST END CONNECTIONS Friends of Stewart Park have been proud West Enders since 2016.  We shared an office with the Ithaca Children's Garden in the Signworks Building through 2018, then were fortunate to find another shared office space (with West Wind Consulting) in the Aeroplane Factory.  Since moving to the neighborhood we have seen many road and trail improvements that have dramatically improved bike and pedestrian safety AND made traffic flow more efficient and predictable.  Special thanks to the City of Ithaca, in particular City Engineer Tim Logue and his staff, for shepherding these projects through the long federal funding, permitting and construction process.  Our West End neighbors Trowbridge Wolf Michaels Landscape Architects have had a hand in all of this good work as well. Great job, everyone!  C&S Engineers designed the new traffic layout on State Street/Route 79 Bridge (upper left) and it features green painted bike lanes and a mid-block pedestrian crossing that is, literally, a life-saver.  Delta Engineers designed the new Taughannock Boulevard extension and bridge (upper right) with bike lanes (lower left) which then allowed for the old one lane Brindley Street bridge to be converted to a trail (lower right). FINGER LAKES FILM TRAIL New Digital Program on Race Films from Finger Lakes Film Trail Finger Lakes Film Trail is proud to present Race Films/Race Matters: Starting Conversations About Race in America, an upcoming online series featuring five important race films; corresponding video presentations about each film by scholars from Cornell University, Ithaca College, University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill, the George Eastman Museum, and Ithaca High School; and  other resource materials, with the aim of encouraging necessary conversations about race, racial tension and race discrimination in America today. In the new year, stay tuned for details about Zoom discussion events related to the digital program. Race Films/Race Matters debuts December 1, 2020 on FLFT's new website  which is launching soon.   In the time being,  visit FLFT on Facebook or at whartonstudiomuseum.org.       The project is produced by Finger Lakes Film Trail, an inter-county initiative created in 2018 by Wharton Studio Museum, in partnership with George Eastman Museum in Rochester, and Cayuga Museum of History and Art & Case Research Lab in Auburn.  Finger Lakes Film Trail is grateful to Humanities New York for supporting the FLFT and making Race Films/Race Matters possible.    MORE PARK & TRAIL NEWS SAFETY  New signs on the Trail As COVID cases are rising, these new signs will soon be raised along the Waterfront Trail -- visual reminders on how to keep yourself and others safe while enjoying our parks and trails. Wearing a mask and maintaining your distance is the least we can do make this special place safe and comfortable to all, including the most vulnerable in our community.  FACILITIES  Seasonal bathrooms currently open weekdays, will be closing soon. While bathrooms in the Park will be closed for the season later this November, Friends of Stewart Park and Wharton Studio Museum will be funding the renovation and winterization of these bathrooms, located in the historic Wharton Studio building. Construction will take place this winter while the bathrooms are closed. The new accessible and year-round bathrooms are the first step in developing the Wharton Studio Museum and Park Center, which includes a café. CAYUGA WATERFRONT TRAIL FSP launces new Trail website FSP has launched the new Cayuga Waterfront Trail website! Found at www.cayugawaterfronttrail.net and on the FSP site at www.friendsofstewartpark.org, the new Trail site is full of beautiful pictures, updated maps, and useful information. We will continue to develop the new site over the next few months, and welcome your feedback. FSP is pleased to work with the City of Ithaca to help support and enhance the Cayuga Waterfront Trail, which was initially developed through an initiative of the Chamber of Commerce. If you have come across places on the Trail that could use a little TLC, or if you'd like to volunteer to help keep our Trail clean and beautiful, email Rick!    COLLECTING MEMORIES Send FSP your Stewart Park Pics Do you have pictures of your family at Stewart Park over the years?
