Let’s Get Inspired…Then Get To Work Dear Friends, While for some reason I was expecting the first day of spring tomorrow, I’ll happily celebrate it today since the sun’s shining and it’s slowly warming up! As spring approaches I often feel a combination of excitement about getting outside and working in the garden, tempered with some trepidation about having to get outside and work in the garden. Thankfully, excitement wins out. Get Inspired!: FSP is kicking off spring with an engaging and informative presentation by Mary Ellen Lemay on the growing Pollinator Pathway initiative, one that Friends of Stewart Park joined earlier this month. Join us on Zoom this Wednesday evening, March 22 - learn more and register below. Get To Work! This Saturday morning, March 25th, from 10 am to 12 noon, FSP is leading its annual Waterfront Cleanup: litter pickup and cutting back native perennials and grasses in Stewart Park and along the Waterfront Trail. Details below. Hope to see you at one or both of these upcoming events! Enjoy the sun while it lasts! Rick Did you know the Cayuga Waterfront Trail is now a certified Pollinator Pathway? Join Friends of Stewart Park and Mary Ellen Lemay in a virtual Pollinator Pathways presentation on Wednesday, March 22 at 7pm, to learn about how planting natives, avoiding pesticides, and reducing lawn have the potential to create healthy and connected habitats for pollinators and wildlife as they move across the landscape. Mary Ellen Lemay is an expert in Environmental Management and a founding team member of Pollinator Pathway Northeast. She’ll explain how the Pollinator Pathway has all the ingredients to help landowners restore biodiversity with simple action steps. Like and share the event on Facebook. REGISTER Get ready for spring with Friends of Stewart Park on Saturday, March 25, from 10 am to 12 pm with the annual Stewart Park Spring Waterfront Cleanup! Dress for the weather, wear boots, and bring gloves, garbage bags, litter grabbers or anything else that will help. Together we'll practice good stewardship of our park and Cayuga Lake’s waterfront. Meet at the Picnic “Large” Pavilion. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we’ll reschedule to April 8th. Thank you to our event partner Zero Waste Ithaca for their help in this cleanup. Come out for I Love My Park Day on Saturday, May 6, from 10AM-noon! We'll prep the park for summer by cleaning up garden beds, planting new landscaping, raking the playground, mulching, trimming lakeside vegetation, and more. Dress for the weather and bring your gloves, rakes, clippers and other gardening tools. Meet at the Information Kiosk by the playground. Join Cayuga Bird Club leaders for guided Spring Bird Walks in Stewart Park. Bird Walks are happening the 3rd Saturday of the month — April 15, May 20 and June 17. Dress for the weather, bring your binoculars, and meet at the Cascadilla Boathouse at 9:00 am. More Park and Trail News Registration is now open for the Cayuga Bird Club’s Spring Ornithology with Steve Kress. Running Wednesday evenings March 29 to May 17 at Kendal at Ithaca. You can attend each class either in person OR via Zoom this coming spring! This is a great way to learn more about birds and their lives! Dr. Kress’s presentations, enhanced with audio recordings, videos, and stunning photos, will include bird ID, song, behavior, migration, conservation, attracting birds, and more. Registration is now open for the inaugural Daffodil Dash 5K and 1-mile run/walk Happening Saturday, April 22 on the Cayuga Waterfront Trail, The Ithaca Garden Club’s and Ithaca Children’s Garden’s Daffodil Dash,will have participants delighted at the sight of almost 90,000 blooming daffodils planted along the Cayuga Inlet by the Ithaca Garden Club’s Daff-A-Dazzle community-wide project team.
