Keeping Stewart Park and the Cayuga Waterfront Trail open and safe

Wednesday, April 29, 2020
Dear Park and Trail friends,

We hope this late April day finds you well.

At Friends of Stewart Park, we've been reading up on the physical and mental benefits of getting outside during this challenging time. We're encouraging people to take the  Parks and Trails New York Pledge. Responsible park and trail use is the key to keeping our public spaces open
during the pandemic. Please do your part be following these guidelines:

☑ Avoid crowded areas: if a park or trail is crowded, be ready to change plans. Also, steer clear of places people tend to congregate: parking lots, playgrounds, picnic areas, overlooks.

☑ Practice social distancing: stay 6 feet away from individuals outside of immediate household members

☑ Stay local: recreate close to home and keep visits short

☑ Wear a Mask:  It's recommended that everyone using parks and trails wear masks. Read more about the importance of masks on the trail here.

Masks may be covering our faces much of the time these days, but Friends of Stewart Park staff have been "seen" much more than usual this last week. Executive Director Rick Manning was interviewed for WBNG 12's "Around the Tiers" with Logan Pollock. Meanwhile, our communications coordinator Janelle Alvstad-Mattson made a rare on-camera appearance representing FSP for Tompkins Earth Day 2020. You can see both videos below.

Read on for exciting playground updates and other news from FSP and our local friends and partners. Take care.

Friends of Stewart Park Update for Earth Day 2020
Friends of Stewart Park joined Get Your GreenBack Tompkins to celebrate the 50th anniversary of of Earth Day this year. Here’s the video we contributed to the event, with updates about park and trail use and what FSP doing to revitalize Stewart Park.
Playground Work Underway
We're so excited to share that construction on Phase II of the inclusive playground has been progressing nicely. The new Carousel Cover is taking shape, and construction on the School-Age Structure began this week. Municipal projects are considered essential work during this time, which means that the playground will be ready for the day everyone will be able to safely play together again! We very much look forward to that time!
Virtual Fund Run for a Good Cause
Want to get out and run for a good cause? The Finger Lakes Runners Club is hosting a virtual run to benefit the Finger Lakes Running Company—Ithaca’s only specialty running shop. The COVID-19 pandemic is hitting small businesses especially hard, and many will struggle to stay afloat without community support. FSP Executive Director Rick Manning dedicated his run to Waterfront Trail supporter and FLRC owner Ian Golden, and FSP supporters and Purity Ice Cream Owners Bruce and Heather Lane.  Who will you dedicate your run to? Click here for more info.

SAFETY
FSP Evidence Shows Benefits of Outdoors Outweighs Risks

A recent article in New York Magazine points to several studies suggesting that the transmission risks for someone following social-distancing guidelines in a public park are very, very small.

As the weather gets warmer we hope to see more and more people using the parks and trails. Remember social distancing guidelines and masks to keep yourself and others safe!
