Welcome FSP's New Executive Director Meloney McMurry

Welcome to FSP’s New Executive Director, Meloney McMurry

The Board and Staff of Friends of Stewart Park are pleased to announce that Meloney McMurry has been hired as our next Executive Director.

Meloney brings broad experience in not-for-profit management and local

government, having worked as an attorney, urban planner, local government official and community volunteer.

Meloney has always had a deep appreciation for our local parks and a

love of planning and placemaking with a particular focus on access and equity. She was a member of FSP's Playground Leadership Committee for the playground capital campaign in 2017.

Most recently, Meloney served as program manager of Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Way2Go transportation education program, where she worked to find sustainable solutions to the region’s diverse transportation needs.

Previously, Meloney served the Village of Cayuga Heights as Deputy Mayor and as a Village Trustee, and is a current member of the VCH Planning Board. Meloney also served as the Chair of the Policy Committee of the Ithaca Tompkins County Transportation Council, working with other local leaders on county-wide transportation planning initiatives.

Before moving to Ithaca, Meloney worked as an urban planner in San Francisco, and spend almost a decade as a land use attorney in New York City. Meloney graduated from Harvard College and completed a law degree at Columbia University as well as a Masters of Urban Planning at NYU. Meloney is a former Girl Scout Troop Leader, a 4-H Club organizer, and an active school volunteer.

Meloney says it was when she previously served on the playground fundraising committee of Friends of Stewart Park that she learned first-hand about the great work that FSP does in our community.

We are excited to have her on board and look forward to everyone meeting her!

From Meloney McMurry

I have always loved Stewart Park. It’s a place where you get a sense of being part of the city, while also feeling connected to our local natural wonder, Cayuga Lake. In fact, it was while standing in Stewart Park on an unusually warm March day over a decade ago that I decided to raise my family in Ithaca. To be starting as Executive Director of FSP feels like a full circle moment.

Over Twenty Years of Waterfront Transformation

Rick Manning co-founded Friends of Stewart Park in 2011 and has been its Executive Director since. Before that, Rick worked with the Waterfront Trail Initiative through the Tompkins Chamber Foundation beginning in 2001, creating the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. Rick’s vision, dedication, enthusiasm, and hard work have made a lasting impact on our community.  While Rick is retiring as Executive Director, FSP is pleased that he is staying on in a consulting capacity, focusing on the park's landscape, the Wharton Studio & Cafe project and Cayuga Waterfront Trail enhancements.

This will give him a lot more freedom to spend time with his wife Sally, son Thomas and soon-to-be daughter-in-law Payton. Rick has plans for more bike riding and playing music. He invites you to check out his Winter Village Music Camp and concerts.

From Rick Manning

We are excited to welcome Meloney McMurry to the friends team.  She knows our organization well having participated  on our playground fundraising committee. Her involvement with cooperative extensions Way to Go project which focused on active and alternative transportation will help FSP strengthen waterfront trail and park connections to adjacent city neighborhoods and other regional trails. She’s experienced, organized and ready to take FSP to the next step in its evolution.

Friends of Stewart Park is proud of our work in Stewart Park and on the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. Your support helps this revitalization continue. Your tax-deductible year end gift is integral to continuing our mission in a new era for FSP.

Thank you!

November Revitalization Updates
In the Park and on the Waterfront Trail

This lovely fall weather has been great for work going on in the park! Construction on the Picnic Pavilion Addition is ahead of schedule! The DPW installed four new interpretive signs on the park’s historic buildings. Thanks to City Forester Jeanne Grace, shade trees will soon be planted around the park, including several at the playground. Read on for details.

Pictured: Fred Cowett (Cayuga Heights Forester and Planning Board Chair), Mike Sigler (TC Legislator), Jodi LaPierre (Visitor Experience Director), Diana Riesman (WSM Executive Director and FSP Board President), Kayla Matos (Ithaca Common Councilmember/1st Ward) Peter Grossman (Board President/Legacy Foundation), Perri LoPinto (Legacy Foundation), Janelle Alvstad-Mattson (FSP Communications Director), Nancy Malina (FSP Board), and Rick Manning (FSP Executive Director).

On Monday, November 18th, under sunny skies and the beautiful blueness of Cayuga Lake, Friends of Stewart Park and Wharton Studio Museum cut the ribbon for new updated interpretive signs on the four historic buildings in the park: the Picnic Pavilion, Wharton Studio Building, Tea Pavilion and Cascadilla Boathouse. The panels replace signs installed in 2014 as a way to engage the public in Stewart Park's history and show people that the park was being cared for and revitalized.

After a decade of large and small improvement projects in the park, it was time to update the signs to reflect all the revitalization projects that have been completed. The signs were designed by Joe Lamarre/ Uncommonplace, who also designed the original signs. Content was updated by Diana Riesman, Janelle Alvstad-Mattson and Tonya VanCamp of Friends of Stewart Park and Wharton Studio Museum. These updated panels include even more history, as well as some new visuals.

The sign project was made possible by Legacy Foundation of Tompkins County. Thanks also go to the City of Ithaca, Historic Ithaca, and everyone who contributed to the project, including Pat Longoria, Christine O’Mally and Lauren Loiacono, for their review and edits.

Picnic Pavilion Addition Progress

There's been a lot of progress on the Picnic Pavilion Addition! Thanks to terrific work by W.L. Kline Inc., construction is projected for completion by the end of the month!

This 925 sq. ft. addition to the back of the Picnic “Large" Pavilion will serve as storage for the Ithaca Youth Bureau's Stewart Park Day Camp and consolidate the camp's operation in one building, enhancing camper safety and providing easier access to boats, bikes and other equipment through a large garage door. A door within the Picnic Pavilion will facilitate access to space for smaller daily supplies and arts & crafts materials. Built-in cubbies with hooks are being added by the side door to the building for the benefit of campers, camp staff, and those renting the pavilion. The new addition, designed by Bero Architecture with engineering work by Andrew Sciarabba Engineering and Taitem Engineering, will also greatly enhance the aesthetic of the south facade of the pavilion.

The storage location frees up 1000 sq. ft. in the lake-facing section of the historic Wharton Studio/DPW Building, paving the way to build the Wharton Studio & Café, a year-round cultural and recreational destination featuring exhibits about the film studio and Ithaca' s role in early American moviemaking. The WS&C will be a nice spot to grab a snack while sitting on terraces looking onto Cayuga Lake.

This project is made possible with NYS funding from Assemblymember Anna Kelles and State Senator Lea Webb, individual donors, and Friends of the Ithaca Youth Bureau.

Tree Planting in Stewart Park

We’re happy to share that the Department of Works was able to plant four new trees in Stewart Park this week, three of which will create wonderful shade for picnic areas near the playground and Splash Pad, and one near the osprey nest on the northeast side of the park. City of Ithaca Forester Jeanne Grace chose to plant “Powder Keg” Sugar Maples, which grow up to fifty feet tall and have beautiful bright red/orange color in the fall. Thank you to our tree sponsors for making these plantings possible!
