Thank you for your support

Thank you! You have helped make Stewart Park Incredible!
November 22, 2022

It's that time of year when we reflect and give thanks, and at at Friends of Stewart Park, we so thankful for you! Your support  financial and moral, as well as the time and energy you contribute when you volunteer  helps us revitalize Stewart Park and the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. What a difference you make! Thank you!
ACCESSIBLE PATHWAY EXTENSION
Thanks to generous financial support from Sunrise Rotary Club of Ithaca, an extension of the Inclusive Playground's main accessible pathway is in the works!  Park Manager Rob Lilly has already excavated and installed the pathway's stone base, and once stonedust is delivered, Rob and volunteers from Rotary and FSP will work together to spread and compact the surfacing. We're so excited to make the park even more accessible with this new path.

Would you like to help finish the path? Sign up on our Volunteer List. We'll send out details once we know more about when the work can be done.

NEW SWING BENCH
Thank you to the friends and family of Nadia Rubaii for honoring her memory with a new swing bench in Stewart Park. This bench was fabricated by Accufab and installed by McPherson Builders, both local companies that have been helpful in our work in both Stewart Park and along the Waterfront Trail.

In Loving Memory

INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND IMPACT
FSP is very  grateful to Aryana and Sonya for taking the time to talk with us about how accessibility on the playground, and in the park as a whole, makes a difference in their lives!

Your support helped create Friends of Stewart Park's first large-scale revitalization project: the Inclusive Playground! This playground is fun for all, but is especially important for families with members with special needs. FSP is very grateful to Aryana and Sonya for taking the time to talk with us about how accessiblity on the playground, and in the park as a whole, makes a difference in their lives! Thank you!
GIVING TUESDAY IS NOVEMBER 29
#GIVINGTUESDAY is a global day of generosity that takes place each year the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year Giving Tuesday is November 29.

This year for Giving Tuesday, Friends of Stewart Park will be raising money for playground enhancements! With input from community members and Racker disability support professionals, we’ve chosen four items you can contribute toward to enhance the playground with more accessible elements everyone can enjoy.

Your gifts can help purchase: a non-verbal communication board, a larger adaptive swing, an accessible picnic table, or a sound station!  And you don't need to wait until next Tuesday. Check out the #GivingTuesday webpage today to see how you can help enhance the Inclusive Playground!

WATERFRONT TRAIL IN WINTER

Winter is a great time to enjoy the Waterfront Trail! Keep in mind, however, the only section of the Trail that receives regular winter maintenance is the stretch along Cass Park, marked in black on this map.

City workers do their best to get the Trail there cleaned-off quickly after every snowfall, so this is by far the safest section of the CWT once the snow comes regularly.

That said, snow naturally melts off the black-paved Trail faster than on unpaved surfaces, so the entire Trail tends to melt-off once temperatures go above freezing for a few day at a time. Please remember to take care whenever using the Cayuga Waterfront Trail in winter.

For more CWT information, visit the website. www.cayugawaterfronttrail.net

Inclusive Playground in Action

Stewart Park's Inclusive Playground in Action, Volunteer Beautification and More!
October 21, 2022

Friends of Stewart Park could not wait to share this video with you! It keys right into our commitment to make the playground — and the whole of Stewart Park — inclusive and inviting to all. Take a look!  FSP is very grateful to Aryana and Sonya for taking the time to talk with us.
THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!
On Tuesday, October 11, around 50 high schoolers from the Code Red Robotics club came out to help in Stewart Park! These hard working students trimmed back invasive shrubs along the lakeshore, picked up 2 contractor bags full of litter, and raked the paths at the playground. If you have a group looking for volunteer opportunities, there's plenty to do for Stewart Park and the Cayuga Waterfront Trail!  Contact us and we'll connect you with the right volunteer work for your group!  Alternatively, sign up for our volunteer listserv to learn about organized volunteer opportunities.
DAFF-A-DAZZLE ON THE CWT
Last week Ithaca Garden Club, Ithaca Children’s Garden and Cornell Horticulture Professor Bill Miller's lab planted 50,000 daffodil bulbs along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail! Ithaca Garden Club has raised over $15,000 to ensure Ithaca has beautiful blooms to help wake us up from our winter haze come early spring. Miller, whose research is heavily flower bulb related, used a Dutch planting machine to assist with the planting. Currently the Daff-A-Dazzle focus is along the CWT in Cass Park, but more flowers will be headed to Stewart Park as well.  Read more about the planting in the Cornell Daily Sun article and learn more about the Daff-A-Dazzle project at their website.
