Summer Fun in Stewart Park

So much happening in and around Stewart Park this summer!

The New Splash Pad and Playground Bathroom are almost done! Friends of Stewart Park will cut the ribbon on these two new park features on July 3rd, and they’ll officially open on the 4th!

The concrete for the Splash Pad was poured last week and water features will pop up soon. And don’t worry, those bathroom doors won’t be see-through for long! There will be an adult-size changing table and windowpane frosting. New walkways and landscaping are also in the works! Thank you to Parkitects and Edger Enterprises for all their hard work on this playground project!

Summer in Stewart Park means Carousel rides! And we've got a number of FREE CAROUSEL DAYS coming up! The Carousel is open Tuesday-Sunday, from 11-7 (plus holiday Mondays). Friends of Stewart Park is grateful to everyone who has signed on to sponsor the carousel this year, providing thousands of free rides to happy kiddos!

If you or or business would like to sponsor the carousel, Click here to learn more!

Join Friends of Stewart Park, Wharton Studio Museum & Historic Ithaca for a walking tour of historic Stewart Park! Discover the park's fascinating history and get an inside look at its current revitalization. Wear your most comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle.

The event is free, but registration is required. Donations are always welcome!

We love Watermusic & Dancing on the Trail, but unfortunately this year’s grant funds have been delayed, therefore we are cancelling Watermusic 2024. The good news is that our funding will be in place for next year, so we’ll plan an extra fun Watermusic for 2025! See you then!

Summer is Just Around the Corner!

Memorial Day Weekend is always the “unofficial opening" of the park. And there's no better way to usher in summer than with blue skies, picnics, and the opening of the Stewart Park Carousel. The Carousel will be free to ride all weekend, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Elizabeth Ann Clune Montessori School of Ithaca their third of sponsoring rides Memorial Day Weekend. What a wonderful gift to the community! If you, your business or organization are interested in sponsoring the carousel, visit stewartpark.org/carousel-sponsor.

Read on for more updates and upcoming events! We hope to see you soon in Stewart Park and on Cayuga Waterfront Trail!

Thank you to all who came out to I Love My Park Day earlier this month! Volunteers cleaned the Tea Pavilion, landscaped several pollinator gardens, swept and raked the sand area, picked up trash and more!

Frank Muller, FSP Landscape Gardener and avid photographer/naturalist, will lead our first BioBlitz event on the Cayuga Waterfront Trail in Cass Park, Saturday, June 8, starting at 10am. Frank will be available to guide you or answer questions until 1pm on the west side of the trail near the bird garden and dragon boat launch in Cass Park.

A BioBlitz is a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species within a designated location and time-period. They are a way for naturalists, scientists, and curious members of the public to meet in person in the great outdoors and, are a lot of fun! There are several tutorials to get you started with iNaturalist at https://www.inaturalist.org.

To get started, you can download the iNaturalist App from the iPhone App Store or the Google Play Store on Android devices.

iNaturalist is an online social network of people sharing biodiveristy information to help each other learn about nature. The free iNaturalist App helps you identify the plants and animals around you while generating data for science and conservation. By recording and sharing your observations, you’ll create research-quality data for local scientists working to better understand and protect nature in your region.

Parkitects’ crew is hard at work on completing the new Stewart Park Splash Pad to meet our anticipated July 3rd Ribbon Cutting. They have nearly completed installing all of the underground plumbing and drainage, and are now placing the gravel base on which the concrete pad will be poured next week. The concrete pad will need a few days to dry and cure, then Edger Enterprises will return in early June to finish all of the walkways and landscape work by their late June deadline. The adjacent Bathroom is also coming along quickly!

Looking for a new volunteer opportunity? Join FSP Executive Director Rick Manning and Landscape Gardener Frank Muller for a Park and Trail Green Team garden maintenance and planting session at the Crew Cove Overlook and Farmers Market Trailhead. Wednesday, June 5 from 12:00 - 2:00 pm.

We are hoping to find a viable mid week time twice a month for those volunteers who wish to help but cannot do weekends or prefer to keep their weekends free and flexible for family and fun.

If you plan to come, please RSVP by emailing info@friendsofstewartpark.org.

FSP Green Team has restrained itself from trimming back our pollinator planting beds until now.

This week we did our first clean up at the Cass Park Bird Garden, Inlet Overlook and Priscilla Point.
