Thank you to Gold Centennial Sponsors Anchor Capital Management, Bousquet Holstein PLLC, Cargill Salt, Centennial Exhibit Sponsor Tompkins Trust Company, 100th Birthday Bash Co-Sponsor Wegmans, and Contributing Sponsors City Harbor, LLC, C.S.P. Management, Fingerlakes Wealth Management, Hancock Estabrook, LLP, La Tourelle, M&T Bank, McPherson Builders, Merrill Wealth Management, Parkitects,  Taitem Engineering and The Home Depot for making Party for the Park and all our Centennial events and exhibits possible!
Take a free ride (or two or three) this Saturday, August 28, courtesy of Visions Federal Credit Union! The Free Carousel Saturdays have been immensely popular, needless to say!
Wharton Studio Museum's 11th Annual Silent Movie Under the Stars is this coming Saturday, August 28, at Taughannock Falls State Park! We're thrilled to be showing Sherlock Holmes, a 1916 film that was thought lost. It was "found", and then restored by the Cinematheque Francaise and San Francisco Silent Film Festival.  An original recorded score by Neil Brand Ensemble accompanies the film. The screening is FREE. A $5 per vehicle parking fee in the park benefits WSM. Bring a picnic, lawn chair, blanket and sweater and arrive early to enjoy Taughannock and its views of Cayuga Lake. Live string music by Rick Manning (mandolin, fiddle) and Tom Hodgson (guitar) between 6:45pm and 8pm. The movie rolls at sunset -- around 8:10pm. See you there!
This Centennial year has certainly been one to remember! There have been many ups and downs, including a planned Covid-safe summer of fun events that were significantly dampened by storms, park closure and rain. At this point, planning an outdoor music event around the wettest summer in ages and the constantly moving goalposts of pandemic safety and guidance feels daunting.

As much as we hate to do so, we've decided to cancel Watermusic for 2021. We hope that summer 2022 will be safe, dry and fun for everyone and Watermusic will return, better than ever.
CASCADILLA BOATHOUSE RESTORATION
Restoration of the exterior of the Cascadilla Boathouse is coming along nicely! Most of the building's siding has now been replaced and painted, and the trim has been restored and painted, as well. This important and exciting work to the iconic Boathouse, which is on the National Register of historic Place, is made possible by a $367,000 grant from the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, written by Historic Ithaca, with additional support from the City of Ithaca and Friends of Stewart Park.

Thanks to Bouley Associates of Auburn with Verdigris Construction/Julie Kitson Construction Management, Bero Associates, and Trowbridge Wolf Michaels Landscape Architects for their continued work on this project!

August in Stewart Park: Movies, Music, Free Carousel, Playground & More
August 13, 2021
Dear Friends of the Park,
Ithaca's Stewart Park Centennial celebration continues during the last three weeks of August with movies, music, free carousel Saturdays and exciting progress on the restoration of the Cascadilla Boathouse.  After a dramatic series of weather events in late June and July, the City's Department of Public Works, with some great volunteer assistance by many of you, have done an amazing job cleaning up most of the fallen trees and bringing a sense of calm and normalcy back to the park.

FSP was saddened to hear of the passing of Todd Peterson who touched the lives of so many Ithaca youth during his thirty-plus years as the Director of the Stewart Park Day Camp.  He will be greatly missed. FSP was happy to award Todd one of our Stewardship Awards in 2017.

We are pleased that we have passed the halfway point in our Centennial Challenge raising nearly $80,000 for park improvements. Thanks to the more than three hundred donors who helped us raising more than $20,000 this summer and to the Triad Foundation for providing $20,000 in matching funds! Most of the centennial funds that we raise will be used as the local match for a NY State grant we submitted on July 30 for the third and final phase of the inclusive playground - the Splash Pad and Accessible Bathrooms.  Click here to learn more about the Mayor Stewart Centennial Challenge and to make a gift.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and stay safe!

ELAYNE'S LENDING LIBRARY

Elayne's Lending Library was dedicated earlier this summer in a small gathering of the late Elayne Nicholas’s friends and family, and FSP supporters. The library and Information Kiosk have a lovely new paint job and sign (thank you to FSP board member Beth Gerrard and Sophia Cooke).

The library‘s shelves have been filled with new and gently used books. Would you like to help keep the library stocked and neat? Email Janelle to learn more about becoming one of our Stewart Park "librarians."
PRESERVATION PROGRESS DISCUSSION
WITH HISTORIC ITHACA

Thanks Historic Ithaca for leading a tour and discussion of the Cascadilla Boathouse restoration on Saturday August 2nd, and thanks to all those who came out for it. We love seeing all the interesting transformations and improvements happening at Stewart Park!

REMEMBERING TODD PETERSON

Friends of Stewart Park is saddened to hear of the passing Floyd (Todd) Peterson. Todd was an incredible leader in the Ithaca community, and spent over 30 years as the director of the Stewart Park Day Camp. He will be missed by many, and our hearts go out to all who knew and loved him.

Friends of Stewart Park will be working with some of Todd's family and friends to develop a fitting memorial in Stewart Park, near the Picnic Pavilion where the summer day camp is located.
